台灣需要幫助的失親兒數目龐大，台北市議員王欣儀協同失親兒基金會，公布最新失親兒數目，從民國90年至99年，全台喪偶單親家庭成長約4萬人，每天有12.17人次成為失親家庭的一員，過去一年個案成長高達36.37%。呼籲大眾發揮愛心，幫助失親兒快樂成長。

父母雙亡或者其中一方過世的孩子，即稱為「失親兒」。失親兒基金會執行長馮玉玲表示，他們服務對象為18歲以下失親兒，9年多來接觸超過5千位個案，發現這些孩子除了有經濟弱勢、隔代教養問題外，心靈的悲痛創傷更需要輔導撫慰。

市議員王欣儀說，每位失親兒背後都有段不足為外人道的故事。在高雄的一對姐妹，一歲時媽媽過世，爸爸離家，由年邁的爺爺奶奶撫養長大，一家四口靠著奶奶當清潔工的微薄收入勉強餬口，看到奶奶的辛勞，讀小二的妹妹還請社工幫她找工作希望幫助家裡，童言童語令人心疼。

馮玉玲表示，基金會透過關懷訪視、舉辦營隊等活動，幫助失親兒解決在人際關係、親子關係、兩性探索、職涯探索等問題，並讓他們感受到社會的愛與關懷，「有助於他們走出自卑無助，勇敢迎接人生。」
