美國女童威廉絲已8歲，但體型還是跟嬰兒一樣，體重只有5公斤，和新生兒般需要父母幫忙換尿布和每天多次餵食。

紐約每日新聞報導，威廉絲的母親表示，「她長得比較慢，她多年來沒什麼變」。事實上，她的皮膚如嬰兒般細嫩，頭髮也很柔軟。

像威廉絲這樣發育不尋常遲緩的案件很罕見，科學家尚未替這樣的症狀命名。

澳洲男子弗利曼已40歲，但看起來只有10歲；1名29歲的佛州男子外表像10歲。此外，巴西1名女子已31歲，看起來卻還是個在學走路的幼童。

學者華克表示，他找到造成不尋常發育遲緩症狀的其中1個基因，可能是女性第2個X染色體的調節基因發生突變。
