台中州廳在日治的1913年興建，由日本建築師森山松之助設計，是當時典型的官署建築；華麗的法國馬薩建築風格，建築正面向東，兩翼各以45度左右優雅伸展，將官廳宏偉氣勢表露無遺，也演繹出人文薈萃的浪漫。

當時州廳完工以後，日治的台中州、光復後的台中市府都在此辦公，直到兩年前縣市合併，市府遷至七期重劃區，此處成為都發、環保兩局辦公室，市政府未來將透過都市更新，要讓州廳歷史建物活化利用，成為人潮匯集的商業區。
